Niko Münzenrieder
Professor
Niko Münzenrieder is an associate professor for physics of matter at the Faculty of Engineering, head of the Flexible Electronics Laboratory, and coordinator of the Materials and Devices for Smart Systems research macro area.
He wants to enable the unobtrusive integration of electronic devices into flexible, soft or stretchable materials and combine electronics with everyday objects. Niko received a Dipl. Phys. degree in physics from the Technical University Munich (TUM), Germany, in 2008, where he worked on vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes at the Walter Schottky Institute. In 2009, he joined the Electronics Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), Switzerland, were he received a Dr. sc. (PhD) degree in electrical engineering for his PhD thesis entitled: “Flexible oxide semiconductor electronics on plastic substrates” in 2014, and the ETH medal in 2015. From 2015 to 2018 he was a Lecturer, and from 2018 a Senior Lecturer in Sensor Technology and Head of the Flexible Electronics Laboratory at the Department of Engineering and Design at the University of Sussex. Starting from 2019 he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sussex Sensor Technology Research Centre. He joined the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in July 2019.
Main research areas
Development, fabrication, and characterization of electronic textiles, and analog sensor systems, based on deformable electronic thin-film devices using functional substrates, innovative fabrication processes and electronic materials.
